Female Mixed martial artists/grapplers in SG?
Hey everyone, I've just started doing Muay Thai for a while now and i love it! I'm also very interested in MMA and submission grappling. I was just wondering if there are any other fellow ladies out there who do either?
Really? I've been around a couple of clubs and the MMA classes are usually just guys. It'll be great to see more girls training MMA. I don't think there're any MMA competitions for the ladies yet...
Sometimes i feel like i'm the only girl in SG who's into MMA!!
It can be lonely, hurhurhur.
Hmm... I nev actually seens female MMA to be speaking. Would be great if they were being introduces.
Not heard about ladies in MMA tournaments but we do have a couple of ladies interested in doing muaythai matches in novice, amatuer and pro catergory.

MMA is like so brutal
Well, it looks very brutal to me... hehe
Imagine women ground and pound... erm...
I know my gym have BJJ lessons....
honestly I wouldn't dare try any grappling with a class full of guys... o_O sometimes I think it looks "wrong" to see 2 men grappling.... looks like one trying to rape another... so imagine if its a girl and a guy O_O
heh.

heh.
i can see where youre coming from. maybe a society such as ours is not yet ready for female/male grappling. i mean, the public would cringe at 2 guys going at one another in a grappling game.
back in legends MMA gym in los angeles, girls are always ready to spar. most of them dont really mind the idea of sparring even with guys (this includes grappling). but of course, the guys are always decent and gentlemen enough to know what theyre doing.
perhaps one day, you'll find a female partner to do your grappling! all the best!

I'd imagine if you did sign up, they'd be happy to stay in your guard all day and not try to pass....
Politicians and diapers must be changed often and usually for the same reason.
Haha yeah, I can understand all the BJJ-related sexual innuendos
Although I must say training with BOTH guys and girls will improve your game in many many ways.
Well, Priss you and I train in the same gym, so if you want to try, I'm game!
yeah, it looks rather vulgar and obsence....lol but it would be nice to see sunfish and priss do some BJJ in bikini

BJJ's a very scientific art
It's anything but sexual! Tsk. Hahaha
my 2 bobs worth...i train with Brazilian Top team Australia here in humble of Adelaide, and perhaps there are cultural differences but we have some ladies that roll with us regularly (and yes guys they are attractive!). However, when you roll with them its ANYTHING BUT sexual (especially our resident purple belt) when they are trying to choke/crank/lock up your arms/shoulders/legs/ankles/neck etc!!. I also get a lot out of rolling with them as it gives lighter guys like me a chance at a very technical roll (rather than pure survival/escapes against 120kg guys, which some might argue aint so much fun)
Agreed torchai and Sunfish, although I joke about it, sex is the last thing on our minds when we're being back mounted, armbarred, trying to pass guard, or being choked silly by the girls.
We're just too busy concentrating on how to avoid getting our asses kicked too badly by you in front of the other guys, otherwise the wisecracks and jokes will never stop. And Sunfish has a good point, if girls only stick to rolling with girls, they won't improve much. You need to experience a lot of sparring partners to really improve.
Wow Torchai, training with BTT must be a great experience! What belt are you now?

lol good one kiatsongrit!!!
Gina Carano ground and pound:
Gina Carano vs Tonya Evinger - MMA fight
Interesting! Didnt know that Gina was involved in this as well. After looking at it, for me personally, the science of 8 limbs is just so beautiful and artistic even in matches. I just don't see any beauty in this form of martial art. And I am not talking about self defence in the streets just pure martial art in its own form. Definately not my cup of tea.
agree agree agree with Kiatsongrits points!
i got my blue belt from Gustavo 'Bomba' Toledo last year, but been a bit slack on the mats, concentrating on standup last 6 or so months-only so much time in the day!! yes mystiq, artwise its MT all the way (although you may change your mind if you see greats like Rickson Gracie etc in action
)
OMG THATS SUCH A GOOD TAG LINE
LOL
I'm not interested in BJJ or grappling.. sorry Sunfish
the thought of rolling around on the floor with my limbs tangled is.... o_O
The only thing I like rolling around with is my bolster.. *hugz bolster and rolls around on bed*

because you are looking at grappling at it's face value. if you dwell deeper into the realm of grappling, you will realize that there are amazing things that happen alot. better still, if you face off against say...a world class practitioner like, the gracies, you may not even know what happened...except that you tapped or went to sleep. unless you view the replay tape afterwards, you will then realize "wow, so this was what he did...amazing!" there are so many beautiful things to witness withnin the grappling world (moves like the flying armbar and even the basic greco roman throw!), you just need to immerse yourself into it and not look at the commercialized part of it. the commercialized value of it (things like MMA and vale tudo), looks void of beauty or complication because most of the atheletes are taught to be practical! you dont want to be fanciful and yet lose the match to a much practical guy.
of course, i do understand your point. cheers.

I like the way they smile... look kinda cute. HAHAHA!
But serious are they grappling or erm... enjoying the moments together?
enjoying while grappling at the same time. wonderful multi tasking i must say. muahahhaaa

it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
But serious are they grappling or erm... enjoying the moments together?
probably just doing an advert.
they sure look cute when posing, but dont incur their wrath in the ring!

Hmmm......If MT didn't exists in SG, I would have probably taken up Capoeira ( hope its the right spelling). I know what you mean but you're right. To me, in the ring, it just looks like a pile of mess trying to out do each other. But in the form itself, I believe the various moves are very compelling and artistic

Yeah, I agree with Priss. I guess one man's meat is another's poison.
Also another thing, there was once a foreigner who came to teach us some grappling stints in the old ECP gym. Pretty good stuff actually. We learnt certain throws, break falls, etc something like judo kind. Then when it came to our MT lessons, we naturally applied what we learnt and it was effective except that we got "disqualified". Our thai instructor told us that the moves we were doing were not approved and not allowed in a MT match. And Gawd...it took me quite a while to get out of that grappling mode taught by the foreigner cause the moves were pretty easy and automatic and very habitual.
LOL Mystiq in my MT fight last year i was warned for 'inadvertently' attempting a judo type throw.
in case you all didnt know, the 2 guys in that pic are 2 of the most feared MMA athletes originally from Chute Boxe: Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua: nice to see they havent forgotten 'sorria'! (portuguese for smile)
torchai,
At least you attempted it.. i was so self conscious of myself when i found out about the rules the night before my match.
Everything I knew and usually did suddenly became an illegal technique...
Rickson Gracie etc in action)
tahts no rickson..thats wanderlei "the axe murderer" silva and he's base is muay thai !!lol and he have killer knees.
MMA queen!satoko shinashi.her base is sambo and judo.

WOW!! now this is artistic and beautiful to watch!!! not the Gina Carona type
Thanks Outcastkid 0 Nice!
MMA queen!satoko shinashi.her base is sambo and judo.
wow, why are all dominant female MMA fighters so hot!? X_X
regardless, that was amazing grappling work. the throws by itself were awesome, and to fuse submissions into those is really really outstanding (0:38 secs classic flying armbar!). those flying armbars and kneebars were great to watch!!!
P.S. anyone realize how she pwned the big dude near the end of the video? classic!!!
generally, just my observation, the asian MMA fighters tend to rely more on technique than on power/strength. thats why probably the more artistic MMA fighters out there are mostly asians, vice versa for the westerners. of course, there are exceptions.
EDIT: on 2nd look, she held on to some holds longer than expected (after the opponent tapped)...that is not good!!!!
tahts no rickson..thats wanderlei "the axe murderer" silva and he's base is muay thai !!lol and he have killer knees.
...i realise that
and the guy hugging him is an incredible striker too (Shogun Rua), not surprising as they are both from Chute Boxe Academy which is heavily muay thai based (and also BTT's top rival over there)

yea, the good thing about chute boxe is that the fighters they produce are actually top notch grapplers too, scary.
Wow... that video changed my impression of grappling...
those really cool jump + arm hold moves... I've seen them on an anime show.. I think Tenjou Tenge (tian shang tian xia > chinese title)
hard to believe it's humanly possible to.. jump, catch someone's arm, hook legs on body, fall on the ground and effectively disable/dislocate someone else
how come the MMA clips I've seen aren't so cool....
and what's chute boxe ?
chute boxe academy is based in brazil, famed for vale tudo style of fighting, produced very gd fighters like wanderlei "the axe murderer" silva, mauricio "shogun" rua and current ufc middleweight champion anderson "the spider" silva. im nt very sure who is still there and who's not, but like what torchai said, they are the arch rival of brazilian top team aka BTT.

because the real aim of MMA is to win, not be fanciful. you can be the most fanciful fighter in the world, but you may not be the best. and the best fighter might not be the most fanciful. but then again, it really depends on what type/kind of MMA clips you watched. the ones from ufc, elitexc, cage rage? or? got any links?
umm, basically chute boxe is just a MMA academy based in brazil. it started off as a muay thai academy, but later expanded into a MMA academy with the introduction of bjj and other aspects of MMA. most chute boxe fighters are very successful in the MMA world. actually, it is quite easy to spot a chute boxe MMA fighter by the way he fights. chute boxe fighters are very aggressive with their strikes (punches, elbows, knees and kicks) and yet very well versed in the grapple area (very efficient with submissions and ground domination).
here are some links
- Gonzaga (the winner) was from chute boxe.
- wanderlei silva was from chute boxe.
- shogun was from chute boxe.
priss,
ive seen that... tsk tsk thats R(A)!
Priss if you like flying armbars/triangle chokes etc you might want to do a search on Rumina Sato and Genki Sudo-MMA showmanship at its best!!
done some limited training in Japan, and with the regular brazilian influence here, it seems the Brazilians favor position before submission, which makes for a real tight, suffocating ground game-but the Japanese, coming from shooto/professional wrestling etc (and perhaps generally 'jumpy' nature?!) go for submissions from all over the place!
My apologies... the anime which I saw many cool grappling moves.... is Ikkitousen (yi ji dang qian (Chinese))
Here's some clips...
And that wanderlei silva clip.... are you actually allowed to stomp on someone's head when he's down? and headbutt as well?!
And that wanderlei silva clip.... are you actually allowed to stomp on someone's head when he's down? and headbutt as well?!
that's only in pride fc.majority mma promotions in usa dont allow stomps, soccer kicks.which i dont mind because soccer kicks and stomps are not tactical and violent.well.just sharing my thoughts.
^same sentiments. they take away this ground n pound element from the ufc which i believe taking away one aspect of wanderlei silva's attacks. well just rmb u arent allowed to stomp or do a soccer kick on your opponent when he/she is down in muaythai! =D
actually, i dont think i know of anymore promotions that allows stomps, kicks, any form of leg attacks (knees etc) once the opponent is on the ground.

actually PRIDE was bought over by the UFC. most of the good PRIDE fighters are now also in the UFC. i'd say that they just need more time to adjust. its like going to live in another country, you need time and experience for you to properly adjust before you become yourself again.
Hey Girls and Guys,
I been doing Brazilian Jiujitsu for Two Years plus now. I seen very very little girls in Grappling let alone MMA.
The Intenstive is very Hard and heart pounding, Muay Thai is a great Art likewise for Brazilian Jiujitsu.
Like Pride and UFC, MMA has the ground and pound stuff that one will totally be taken into a total shock.

I love Crayon Shin Chan, 我爱蜡笔小新

Depends on what you mean in do. If you mean train, I think there should be quite a number. If you mean compete, then it's a different story.
At the last grappling tourney I went to some time back, there were a number of women competitors doing submission grappling (gi). The lady champion is also a Judo champion I believe, and she's very good, I think most of the ladies competing came from Judo backgrounds.
As for ladies competing in MMA I haven't seen any yet. But I'm sure they're ladies who could compete around, I know of a couple of ladies who could kick some [translation=my] serious ass in MMA.
