Fighting against a taller opponent
Hey guys !
Just wondering. Are there any good strategies to share when facing a taller opponent ? I've been sparring with a guy from my gym and he has a 15cm height advantage as well as 15kilos weight advantage over me. Everytime i go in to take body shots or kick at him , he'll either clinch me or toss me off. I tried sweeping him but failed most of the time (probably due to not being able to do it well enough) . He doesnt really use his legs much and his punches comes in hard and fast (he's previously trained in boxing I think ). Anyone kind souls care to gimme some pointers on how to turn the tide on him? Very much appreciated. Cheeeeers !!!

it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
if the moves are allowed under muay thai rules.

AFAiK, parries and blocks are definitely legal in muay thai lol.
because you are shorter, you have a lower centre of gravity, use that to your advantage! try and get in and close up the distance between you and him. his reach advantage will probably be alot and you have to take his reach out of the equation. press the action, move towards him constantly, if he moves back or away, keep the pressure! if he clinches you, take knee shots at his legs and thighs, if you do it right, you'll throw his balance off abit, and then you can work from there. if he tries to use his reach and punch, forearm block it and then move in quick to throw an elbow or clinch or anything.
thats as much i can think of...
good luck!!

Him clinching you doesn't mean he has any kind of advantage, it's a neutral position. Him tossing you means he has better timing and skills in the clinch, or maybe he's much stronger than you. Ask your coach for counters you can work on him.

You mean as in grabbing his kicking leg and sweeping?
He doesnt really use his legs much and his punches comes in hard and fast (he's previously trained in boxing I think ).
That's actually good for you. He shouldn't be boxing you if he's got the reach advantage, he should be keeping you away and kicking the snot out of you.
If he likes to use his hands, teep him. Height advantage or not. your leg's still going to be longer than his. If he manages to break through, get in close and work your hooks and uppercuts. Forget about the straight punches. At your hooking range, his punches won't be of much use. He'll probably then just try to clinch and knee you, so it's back to the clinch again.
Politicians and diapers must be changed often and usually for the same reason.
thanks for all the feedbacks. very much appreciated.

i'll try to do that but my timing's not good enough. occasionally , when he uses a kick i try to counter by sweeping on his standing leg. once again , not fast enough at times. lol.

Grabbing the leg first might help.

And the next question will be....how can we improve our timing and rhythm?
by sparring more..

how about parrying his punching hand and countering with an elbow?
is that ok?
My computer kept beating me at chess.
But it was no match for me at Muay Thai.

i agree that its about timing and rhythm. look at the fight between naruepol and trevor , its the same. but if u'r saying that i can learn and get my timing better through videos , i beg to differ.
it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
the match between trvor and npl, trevor was just outclassed.
im refering to how a shorter persn can still win a taller person.
is in the army...
i see. but well , trevor could have performed better if he had a better timing and rhythm back then . right ? ![]()

BTW, what is parry and deflects.?
Corea, i think best eg of u and ur sparriing partner is the fight between Mike Zambitis and 'forgotten who' in K1 Max fight. The only different is Mike opponent still uses his legs.

Sparring with each other is not a time to take each other out, or even try to, though it does happen on occasion.
You can ask people for advice, and you can try it out to see if it works. But in my opinion, you need to face the fact that this guy is bigger and perhaps better than you.
Therefore, keep on training, keep on learning, keep on sparring, with as many different people as you can.
You could also try asking the guy himself.
"Hey, every time I try to get in close you clinch or push me away. What do you think I could do when sparring against you?"
If he teaches you what to do, then you become a better fighter for him to spar with, and then maybe he can learn from you.
Keep working on your fundamentals, and your conditioning, and keep sparring.
By the way .........
...he'll either clinch me or toss me off...
This means that he ...uhh ......takes hold of your manhood, gets you all excited, then .....it ends all messy.
Hi,
Hope I did not post this too late. By the way, I'm new here. I live in Thailand for 2 years already and trains in Fairtex Pattaya since 8 months ago. Well, i still lives in Thailand.
I've ever did sparring with someone who is 25cm taller than me cos from Holland! And realise the only way to tackle tall people is to use low kicks. since they've got advantage over height by knocking you over easily, do protect both sides of your face always whenever you do any kicks. One super thing that works well is when they try to punch you in the face lower down your head and aim at their stomachs. give them a good punch at the stomach while you lower your head. And if you have some time, a low kick will do the trick to get the person down.
I don't know if you understand what I'm talking about. But it works for me. And hey, watch out when they give you a kick in the front cos you can fly far!!!
but arent u taking the shot too even whn u bend ur face down. plus,
his shot would probly push u back and the lack of reach,
it'll be hard for u to even hit him in the body.
is in the army...
What I meant is that when you lower your head, you're bending your knees at the same time. By doing this, take one step forward, which leg depends if you're left-handed or right. By doing this you avoid his shot on your face and you can advance to reach his stomach. Not easy to explain yeah. It'll be simpler if I can show you in action. hahaha!
Fighting with a tall opponent isn't easy dude. Unless nut hitting is an A OK!
Now that would be cool...

Ok...joke..joke..joke.

Low kicks.. low kicks.. and more low kicks! Level him down then take a shot at the nose, right punch, right elbow, left knee
how about parrying his punching hand and countering with an elbow?
is that ok?

**seriously does anyone in Singapore actually no what scoring is in muay thai?
elbows DONT score unless they show effect - this means they have to cut, stagger or cause your opponent to cease his attack and look unbalanced - you can land 100s of elbows but if they dont do they above they dont score well at all.......
it amazes me how many people give advice in SG but actually lack the understanding of what scores and what doesnt..... its pretty sad as it seems lots of referees etc here also havent got a clue
tall opponents, low kicks, boxing inside their long range and body clinching is the wy - however you have to get past there long arms, and super dangerous knees and elbows first - so its easier said than done
remember though if hes much bigger and much hgeavier you would never fight him anyway - thats why they have weight class's in Muay Thai ... so dont worry too much....

are other fighting styles allowed?
i also want to know for my own knowledge.
i wonder if it's ok to parry or deflect.
My computer kept beating me at chess.
