i like the idea and thought of it before but before you all start jsut somethings to keep in mind.
1. Law. considered illegal gathering? because the last time i did that with a frd (2 of us) police came ask us go home. they say do martial arts in public need license or something.
2. Noise. dont wanna disturb people right? we all must be gracious singaporeans!
but i guess its ok if the park is far away.
3. Those pesky chao ah bengs who like to disturb people. yes. no reason to be afraid of them but i prefer not to interact with people who have the need to include vulgar words into every sentence.
ya.. jsut my 1 cent worth.
I have been teaching people around my area for a few months already n nothing of those sorts i came across. I teach people in the park and nothing of those sorts came across for me yet. SO far so good. Find a peaceful place to train. No such thing as illegal gathering if parents allow and support. If they say need certificate then u can always say that we are practicing and both parties agree n are firm to it and bring safety equipments too such as shin guards n mouth guard n gloves to acts as a safety precaution. As for $ concern we are doing this for the passion n no $ involved. So basically they can't do anything to us if u follow these rules. I have been doing this for some time teaching people what i know for the passion of it and so far it goes well.

Illegal gathering has nothing to do with parental consent or mutual agreement between both parties, safety equipments or free lessons. Its just that you are lucky that police do not patrol the park area where you practise or teach. In practicing any martial art especially organising one or being a coach, you need a license and when using public property such as parks, you do need permission or permit. Just like those old folks practising tai chi quan in parks, they have permits too which have been applied by their RCs or CCs. Again the reason is all about safety of any martial art. If anything happens to the trainee , are you going to answer for it? Are you going to pay the medical bills for the person who got accidently injured? (I am not asking you the questions rather its something to think about)So far, you have been lucky not to have been spotted or being complained by park users, or else the police will ask you to obtain permission especially if they do see a group of youngsters practising martial art among themselves in a park. Singapore has alot of laws to protect or to deter situations from happening and a genuine activity warrants necessary documentation, licences and permits.
Singapore law makes it illegal for more than 5 people to congregate in public without a permit from the government or other relevant parties/agencies. While this ruling is politically motivated, the police Force use it on groups of people gathering at odd places and even parks doing unsual activities. If they see a classroom for 40 people gathered for a birthday celebration in a park, its different as the intent is obvious but if they see a group of people practicing martial arts in a park, its another story and the intent becomes suspicious...You get what I mean?
I think u forgot the main topic here. Organise training for the not so rich for the gym. We are not rich n fortunate like the rest. We are really passionate about the sport n all but in Singapore $ comes into place. Do we have a choice? Is someone going to sponsor us for training in the gym? Have u felt penniless before wanting to get something u want very much and u can't afford it? U will try ways n systems around it to get what u want. This is Our solution so far for the not so rich. In the end everything in Singapore is about $. Without $ nothing can be produced. By the way martial arts aren't supposed to be earned through $. It's a way of life. Do u know that in Thailand there is a guy who trains people for free? Muay Thai n Muay Boran. All he asks for is Food and offerings thats all. I understand that Singapore is a $ country with laws n all.........prices of goods are increasing and pay are decreasing.....Where the rich strives and the poor go nowhere. That's the hard fact. And hence the shirt u see people wearing "Singapore the FINE country". Or u have any other solutions feel free to share for the NOT SO RICH
To give you all a better understanding, Section 141 (Unlawful assembly) of the Penal code states;
An assembly of 5 or more persons is deemed to be an “unlawful assembly” if the objective of the persons is to:
a) exert criminal force on the Government, or any public servant;
b) resist the execution of any law, or legal process;
c) commit any mischief or criminal trespass, or other offence;
d) use criminal force to deprive a person of any rights; or
e) use criminal force to force any person to do what he is not legally obligated to do, or to omit to do what he is legally obligated to do.
Police often use (c) when they come across groups of people doing odd or suspicious activity and thats when they will ask you to produce your ID or ask to disperse home. The only advise is to apply a permit for park activities.

No Obiasheik, I did not stray from the topic
, what I am afraid is that in wanting to explore other ways to continue the passion for Muay thai, people may do things unknowingly or get carried away innocently. From my experience, Singapore Law is not very forgiving and they always say ignorance is not an excuse. Its just a heads up that certain activities in certain places needs permits, etc.
Ok thanks for the heads up. U seem like a Law person yourself. Hahahhahaha. So the best way is to save up and go Thailand n train for the not so rich. The amount u save up 3 to 4 months of Muay Thai training in Singapore u can use that amount to train in Thailand. Note that training 1 month in Thailand hardcore is the same as training 2 to 3 months in Singapore due to work etc. So save up sacrifice everything and train in Thailand that's the best n cheapest way.
thanks for the info Mystiq.
I never knew there was such a law here.
I guess one way to circumvent it would be to train in small groups of 2-4 people? that way you skirt the "5 or more people". But then again, that may just be technicalities and is subject to the interpretation of the police officer.
makes me wonder though, so how do people meet up and train on their own?
The idea is very noble.
Why don't you just make it legal and then apply for a permit to teach in the parks? The trainees could all share in the cost of getting the permit.
Would the permit cost so much that it is more cost efficient to train in Thailand? Would it also be to troublesome to do the legal work that you would rather train in Thailand?
I for one haven't trained in Thailand yet. But I think that people have to consider a lot of expenses when they plan to go there for training. Like airfare, food, lodging and of course the training cost itself. I heard that it cost around 1000SGD for 1 month of training with food and lodging. But this doesn't include the transportation fees yet. Is this cost correct or is it a bit overkill? But if this is true then I'd rather stay here in sg and train at the local gyms. Let us also consider that not everyone can take a 1 month leave to go to Thailand for training.
Please understand that the comments provided by our fellow forumers are being said so that you wouldn't get in trouble with the law. Don't take it badly, they are only looking out for the safety of the over all Muay Thai community. It's an advice that I honestly think, you should consider. They are not trying to dissuade you in doing it but they are just giving you the problems/scenarios that you might encounter when you do it.
I do hope that you guys can proceed with your idea and contribute something to those who could not afford to train in costly gyms. I for one can barely manage to pay for the monthly fees. Let alone go for the exaggerated packages that some gyms offer.
You guys are side tracking. The poster is just looking for people to train with. You are making it way more complicated than it has to be. Just name time and place so people can decide whether to go or not.
Cheers.
