choosing a gym
Hi guys, im planning to train MT soon and need help on a gym.
Im 17 and just finished my o levels and would like a gym wear i can train Muay Thai, BJJ and if possible, MMA at the same time.
I need advice on quality of training and the trainers. that is the only factor. prices, location, i have no problems.
I sought out these locations:
Evolve MMA
Fightworks Asia
Fight G
Hilltop bukit batok (no bjj or mma but it doesnt matter)
BXG Fitness
Hopefully ratings and detailed reviews could be provided. Im leaning more to Evolve because i do want to turn professional in the future (MMA), but for now it doesnt matter. i only wish to know how good the Muay Thai trainings are.
Thanks in advance people.
haha i know, i read through the forum quite a lot of times already, but none of them really answered my question specifically (training quality). no one here also seem to answer my questions about Evolve, hence i decided, putting up a ew topic would be better. thanks for replying though. (=

Learning MMA on lesson alone only teaches you some of the aspects in Mixed Martial Arts. I suggest you join MT/BJJ first as startups and to emphasize on your standups/ground fight.
There are many more gyms, you may wish to go down to thier trainings
and check out for yourself, or just check the web too
i read up on evolve before, they seem to spare no effort in bringing big names from thailand. whether if thats really good, i have no comments since i've never tried their training.
but if u really have no problems with any price or location, y not take 6months off and go bangkok and train? it might be cheaper than evolve.
or go por pramuk gym and train with buakaw?
hehehe.
To be the best potato, you must first be a true potato.
haha location i meant singapore.
i think i will go for Fight G/FWA first, since i just neeed to learn MT and BJJ first.
since i train at fight g,the quality of training is pretty good(muaythai) i hope i'm not advertising.but the classes are big and u hold the pads for the your partner. evolve too expensive IMHO,even fedor trains in a community gym with kids.
yup but is evolve any good or better for the price? its very expensive (but i can afford), but i decided probably somewhere cheaper would be better, since i only have self-defense MA experience and no MT experience.
Fedor is an inspiration, but worth noting his gym has excellent coaches. His Sambo trainer is reputedly the best in Russia. Plus his gym produces professional fighters on a regular basis, haha.
i would suggest you go down for a trial class at evolve and then fight g,and compare them.IMO,if you're just starting out u dun have to pay so expensive fees at a "world class"gym, just go a good gym and learn your basics first.
Oh and ken, fight g classes arent very structured.
EG: They don't coordinate their lessons. So they can be asking u to do kicks when they have never taught it before.
it's quite a free and easy kind of lesson structure. so i think u should take teelin's advice and go for trial lessons at places before deciding since u seem serious on turning pro at it.
To be the best potato, you must first be a true potato.
And most MMA classes are like that, right?
They won't emphasize much on basic kickys/punchies but more of
the techniques used in the cage/ring and sweeps/guards/mount etc.
Thats why, take up beginner lessons of the other martial arts you plan to do till
you are really ready for Mixed Martial Arts IMO!
my advice would be to go for mt training for a month first den go for mma training.some of the guys who doesn't do mt and bjj but only go for mma classes, their stance and striking is weak imo.so is their roundhouse.the better mma guys in the class are who are solid at mt and bjj.hope that helps.
Yes I agree with teelin.
"Do a guard drill"
"Guard?"
Its better to take basic skills first
in like MT /BJJ / Judo or whatever you wish ;D
in a different gym u mean?
speaking of prices, what are the prices of the BJJ classes in Evolve, ken?
i think most of us would be interested to know. (this is not gym advertising i hope)

Just wondering what do you guys look out for when choosing a gym.
Are the qualities of the training and trainers even, that locations and prices and facilities matter more?
i think about $300 for unlimited. mma.sg has posts by evolve that that says lessons start at $189, maybe that is for one lesson. although they dont reveal prices these days until you go down for a trial class. i think students get it cheaper.
btw guys how is FWA?
For my BJJ im starting traiing in Gracie Combatives, a street-oriented version of BJJ that teaches all the moves up to blue belt (takes a year or two). It includes punches and high resistance because its street-oriented, hopefully its good for MMA.
That is why i can just train in MT first at another gym, and eventually start BJJ at that same gym.
Wah Wah.... Always you new guys like asking about the same questions. Which gym have this and that, near house, price, training and bla bla bla bla......
Here I got to stick to my nick name KAYPO. Every Gym here are good and so as the masters. When you post this question here you will get confused. Why? Each one will tell their good points. Those who get use to their gyms will tell their gym are good, but that does not mean it will be good to you.
You can go to the Best gym in the world but its yourself to further put your heart to learn. So what if the gym is old, and you hear many stories. Never try never know. You dont like it after a few sessions try another one. Hey.., not contracts man.
No gaurantee even you go Thailand you will get the best of what you want.Just ask yourself what you wanted and train in that gym and see if you get what you want. You can even talk to the friendly masters and ask them first. Who can tell you better than the masters and see it for yourself. So,dont talk about evolve or other things, you yourself man.
The Kaypo Muaythai Hamster Will Not Tolerate
Any Nonsence. Dont Play Play Ha?
Yes, somehow have to agree on some.
Its not about the gym, the price or the super super high quality.
it's about you, yourself , commitment etc.
One may come from a ulu gym, but then, maybe one day you'll see him in the ring, the octagon etc somewhere.
All the Gym is good but it is yourself . You can have a good gym and Master and if you don't train hard and put Muay Thai inside you than it is useless ! You can afford to pay for expensive class in Muay Thai and if you don't work hard enough , u still can't achieve ! So everything come from hardwork and ur heart !!!!
Just wondering what do you guys look out for when choosing a gym.
Are the qualities of the training and trainers even, that locations and prices and facilities matter more?
Depends on your goals. If you're just looking for a good workout then I guess things like location, prices and facilities matter more. If you're looking to learn good skills, then the trainer matters more.
As in life, there are differences in ability, knowledge and heart. There are good char kway teow hawkers, then there are lousy char kway teow hawkers. There is no difference when it comes to instructors. When looking for instructors, I first look for ability and knowledge. What are his credentials? Depth of knowledge of his craft? Ring experience?
Then I also look for the ability and desire to teach. A good practitioner may not always translate into a good teacher, but the chances are high. Some have learned their basics so long ago that they no longer remember how they were taught or what learning as a newbie was like, so they may not always be able to translate that knowledge to you. Teaching ability is a different craft altogether from fighting ability. Does the person explain himself well? Is he able to observe and point out little mistakes you're making and tell you specifically how to correct your mistakes? You know a good teacher when you see one.
Lastly, does the teacher have the heart and desire to teach? Or is he watching the clock for your time to be up? It's easy to tell once you've observed them for awhile. Some have a real passion and spend a lot of time correcting every tiny mistake and making you repeat the action till you've got it, or they try different ways of explaining things to you so you get it. They sometimes go into overtime just to get something right with you.
Others couldn't care less and hope time passes quickly. So even if the trainer has the knowledge and ability to teach but does not have the desire to impart knowledge to you, it's pointless.
So....take a trial class, keep your eyes open then make your choice. Look around a few gyms before signing up.
Politicians and diapers must be changed often and usually for the same reason.
Its the heart and soul that matters most...if u are into it half heartedly might as well u join a cheaper gym..they also can train u well..but if u really want to join evolve for MT class and both yr heart and soul speaks as one,by all means..trainers there are focusing hard on the fundemantle and basic of MT..if u cant do well in basics,u dont go up the ladder man..once u are good, then advance training follow by tactical training..if u are up to it,they will ask u to join as one of their fighters..but from basic to advanced is not easy at all..it takes only ONE trainer to say no and u wont go up the ladder... they have this ranking system..

Just curious, there're a lot of big names under the Evolve instructor list but who actually does the day-to-day teaching?
Politicians and diapers must be changed often and usually for the same reason.
i dunno abt now since they already have 2 gym under their name..but when there is one gym, they take turn to each but still everyday u can see their faces there..after all they are human who needs rest too..maybe they work in shifts now or just bringing in more trainers..is hard to manage 2 gym both operating 7 days a week mon to fri 0630am to 2200 and weekend 0930 to 1800..

you mean you actually get taught by:
# Yodtong Senanan - Kru, Muay Thai
# Renzo Gracie - Professor, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
# Rafael "Gordinho" Correa de Lima - Professor, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
# Roberto "Gordo" Correa de Lima - Professor, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
# Toy Sityodtong - Kru, Muay Thai
# Nuengpichit Sityodtong - Kru, Muay Thai
# Yodsanan 3K Battery Sor Nanthachai Sityodtong - Instructor, Boxing
# Samart Payakaroon - Kru, Muay Thai
You've actually seen them around in the gym teaching day-to-day classes (not promotions, special events, special seminars)?

For samart is more to like guest star trainer..his never there..the rest is there..not everyday day though..most of the times...

that's pretty cool, didn't know that. i thought they just put up the names there as advertising. Renzo Gracie lives in S'pore now?

Renzo Gracie signed with ufc on Dec 2th.I dun think he'll be teaching regularly.
Don't think Renzo Gracie is teaching in Evolve. He got a gym in New York probably just drop by a couple of time in Singapore for the grading. But I heard his grading is superb hard. Haven't really tried, and I don't intend to join Evolve too. Damn expensive.
Btw, are Renzo Gracie, Rafael "Gordinho" Correa de Lima and Roberto "Gordo" Correa de Lima the only black-belts in the entire Singapore.
up Renzo is like Samart...guest star trainer...

Professor Gordinho is based in Singapore, Master Renzo came to Singapore during the grand opening of Evolve MMA earlier this year. Professor Gordo is in Singapore currently, he going back somewhere next week.
Currently there are a total of 5 BJJ Black Belts in Evolve Pomo and Far East, Leandro Thomas Issa da Silva, Almiro Barros, Joao Carneiro, Cristiano Carvalho and Professor Gordinho. Antonio Braga Neto, Rafael Dos Anjos and Zoro Moreira are in Evolve Brazil.
For Muay Thai, We have Kru Nuengpichit Sityodtong, Kru Yoddecha Sityodtong, Kru Chatri Sityodtong, Kru Yodsanan 3K Battery Sor Nanthachai Sityodtong, Kru Daorung Sityodtong, Kru Saknarong Little Duck Sityodtong, Kru Yodrit Sityodtong and Kru Samart Payakaroon.
All of the Muay Thai instructors are in Singapore, even Kru Samart who's in Singapore for a month and he's teaching at Evolve Far East.
Hope my answer help to dispel any thoughts on whether these instructors are actually in Singapore.. and to add my own thoughts, there are tons of Muay Thai and MMA gyms in Singapore, anyone is free to join any gym they want to, if this gym is too expensive for you, then go to somewhere more affordable to you. I've seen a lot of online keyboard warriors making uncalled for remarks on the cost issue. If you can't afford it, then move on.. no one is twisting anyone's arm into joining any particular gym right?
Well thanks Rix for you word of wisdom, and I agreed with you. But could you give us more information regarding about your cost of Brazilian Jujitsu training and Muaythai or MMA? Since it sound like you're working or an associate with Evolve.
It wouldn't hurt right? this forum is to share our thoughts and well, since if we're online keyboard warrior please enlighten us.

Grake, i won't consider it words of wisdom since i am just stating my own opinion. I don't work with Evolve. I simply just train there. I am but earning a lowly pay of less than 2K per month but i save up so that i can join a gym that i like.
The keyboard warrior comment is not meant at you but rather at those who make unwarrant for comments on the internet and not just here. I would not know the cost scheme of Evolve MMA though i would suggest to anyone who wants to join any MMA or Muay Thai gym to simply ask for a trial and talk to the gym staff.
If my keyboard warrior comments offend you, then my apologies but it was not directed at you to begin with.
haha guys, thx for all the replies, in the end it all boils down to the practitioners, that i totally agree.
For BJJ, i have a friend who formerly trained for 8 months at Fight G teaching me BJJ. Before that, i already knew what a guard, mount, armbar to name a few is and could execute them, albeit not very good. He's a good start cause i cant afford anythig other than my Kapap fees now, plus he's good and teaches well.
So it does in the end boil down to the figt]hter himself, and not the gym.
Its true, and i realise the whole point of the thread was to let me know i had to try for myself each gym, then train to get my basics up.
Thanks again for your replies people, once i get my pay, i will be heading down to the various gyms to take a look. (=

thank you for the information. however people are also free to voice their opinions here. that's the purpose of this forum to begin with.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions but if you read my post again, I did not say in this forum. I said online, in this case, other forums. And once again I apologies if I upset anyone with my comments. I rest my case.

there are lots of informations on the forum about gyms and stuffs. go ahead and look at them.
Train hard,
Fight harder.
