Welcome Kevoz..Im relatively new to MT too..so pls pardon me if I'm worng..I think shinpad is mainly used during training..when learning kicks and blocks with your classmates..I don't think u wanna have bruises all over your shin..
yeah. when learning to block kicks and to kick your partners , you'll need shin pads. u'll use shin pads for sparring too. ![]()
it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
Thanks ! At least now I know why the need for it..haha. Getting mentally prepare for the tough training ahead..
they all bluff you, the shin pad is for you to store secret stash of mars bar, so that when your coach is not looking, you can take out and eat........
Politicians and diapers must be changed often and usually for the same reason.

i got the adidas glove-handwrap thingy from liang seng a while back. $37.45. it saves time and effort on putting handwraps on and off during class.

oh.. so is abt the same thing ?
maybe it only works for us at our gym because we only put on handwraps for pad sessions. no gloves or anything but if you have to put on gloves at your gym, perhaps proper handwraps is in order.

Thanks..which gym u are training at ?
wearing handwraps can be a choir after it loosens and starts becoming a mess after u wear it and hold the pads for ur partner.

ok..thanks.
O.o? i have been wondering if training without shin guards will be better? as it conditions your shin to be tougher just like the old school way? or is it going to cause some pain when we get old? ![]()

erm..though I am newbie at this but with regards to your question, heres my point of view. Correct me if I am wrong.
I believe wearing shinguard to train is better for those who trains but not to the level of competition fights to prevent any injuries. But for those fighters as said , it will be good to train the old sch way as it will really benefit them.
oh.. but i am just wondering if those injuries will strengthen your shin or will it give you problems when you grow old. If i doesn't then why not ? haha cheers ![]()
Hmm..den I better leave it to the experts to ans your question.. ![]()

Hmmmm. From my understanding, be it muay thai or other sports, we will experience different form of sickness/pain, this and that as we grow older.(as in OLD,really old. 40 or 50 maybe.) Because, we tend to severe our nerves every now and then. As to regard to your queries ahbiah, i was once told by them here that when we conditioned our shins, We are actually killing our shin nerves. That is why when we grow older with muay thai, when we block a kick with our shin, it cost us lesser pain than when we just started out. But if u think u cant ever take it, remember this, ' Pain is for temporary, glory is for eternity.'
---> Correct me if im wrong elders.
Hi guys,
Juz to check..normally wat size of gloves to u guys wear for normal day training ? I suppose 12oz is like a more common size..
Guys, guys.... the size of the gloves depends on the size of your hand plus the handwrap.
About shin conditioning, there are a tons of threads here already. Don't hit your shins with hard objects, don't roll anything hard on them so it becomes painful. Just kick the bag, that's it, kick the bag 1.000.000 times, that will be more than enough. All the stories about the "real" fighters kicking trees... well... they kick young BANANA trees, those trees are soft, like the bag. Don't over do it, you'll only suffer for nothing.

er wrong. even professional figthters use shin guards when they do sparring.
To protect both themselves and their opponent.

Guys, guys.... the size of the gloves depends on the size of your hand plus the handwrap.
Sorry Gaijinu. Not always.
The gloves thread has already been written, and rewritten probably countless times, and unfortunately there is some misinformation.
The weight of the gloves depends on what they are being used for.
Pros & amateurs wear big gloves for sparring. Some even use 18oz, and I'm sure there are even bigger. Big gloves, because they're heavier, making you work harder to keep your hands up. Also because there's more padding, so they offer more protection to the hands whilst at the same time cause less damage to your sparring partner.
If you don't believe me, watch a video of Manny Pacquiao
Here, he's wearing a pair of green Twins gloves.......and they look pretty big to me.
Big gloves are for (heavier) sparring, and generally the gym supplies these, but they're more expensive. Fighters usually have their own gloves which they use for other training purposes, such as bag work (bag gloves, usually, because they're more hard-wearing, and cheaper, whilst at the same time offering the hand a lot of protection), floor to ceiling bag/ball, speed ball. And they also use these lighter gloves for more controlled sparring, or pairwork.
Eg. "You attack me like this with a left jab, I'll try and block it like this with my right hand, then counter immediately with my left jab".
.
There are lots of different brands on the market, and it seems that with some, lighter gloves are for smaller hands, and larger gloves are for larger hands. The lady in the Golden Mile sports shop told me the same, but how many gyms do you think she's been to? How many amateur champions or pro-fighters has she sparred with?
.
Let's be honest, there isn't much of a boxing / Muay Thai tradition or scene around here, is there? It's growing, true, but there isn't much depth to it.
However, if people aren't really training their hands very much, then there isn't going to be a lot punching power anyway. In that case, I guess it doesn't matter much if you're sparring with big gloves (16oz) or little ones (12oz). I guess it would look strange seeing a 90lb girl wearing 18oz sparring gloves anyway
.
Fighters usually wear 8oz or 10 oz in the ring in an actual contest, but in sparring they wear 14oz, 16oz or 18oz. Why is that? Their hands don't get smaller when they get in the ring, but perhaps their ba**s might
.
If someone here has more experience, then go ahead tell me I'm wrong.
I agree. I think all serious boxing training (where you're throwing with some power and not just tagging your opponent) should be done with:
- mouthpiece
- headgear
- 16 oz gloves
It's a health hazard otherwise.
Politicians and diapers must be changed often and usually for the same reason.

it all depends on your own choice of preference dude.
it'll be better to get the correct handwraps as those sold at liang seng are actually shorter then the fairtex and twins wraps. besides the equipments , bring your towel and one big bottle of water ! good luck and have fun !!
