Hello everyone ,

my name is Steve and i'm 25 years old .
I have 1 big passion , you could even say it's more like an addiction to me !
I love Muay Thai ! It's the first thing on my mind when i wake up and the last
thing when i go to sleep .

I've been to Thailand 5 times already ( i'm half Thai ) , and trained twice in a camp .
The first time 1 month , the second time 3 months and now i'm leaving in a couple of
weeks for 7 months . The training was ok the first time but way too short .
The second time was really good but i still smoked at the time and only after a month or so could
i stop smoking . It helped me alot but obviously it wasnt enough .
Almost a year later now ( still stopped with smoking ) , and i've really been working out and have
improved my cardio alot .

Ok , now about the training . Training starts from 7.30am till 11am in the morning and from
3.30pm till 7pm in the evening . I'm planning on really getting the most out of my time in Thailand
so i will be training 2x a day / 5 ( maybe even 6 if i can ) times a week .
As you can guess this is going to be really tough on my body and there are a couple of things that
i dont know how to deal with .

* When to eat : training for 7 hours a day means i'm going to have to eat alot , but i don't see how .
If i get up at 6am and drink a protein shake and eat breakfast half an hour later then i only have like less then an
hour before training . I'm worried that it won't go well with the running in the morning ,
it's more then 5 km / 3 mile every day .
Then at 11am another protein shake and half an hour later lunch .
Now comes the tricky part : around midday alot of guys go sleep for like half an hour or so ( i know i will ) ,
so you can recuperate a little bit . Then it's already like 1 - 1.30pm , i won't be hungry yet but in 2 hours time
there's already the next training and i don't think it's a good idea to train that hard on an "empty" stomach .
So what to do ?
Training finishes at 7pm , another shake and half an hour later dinner .
So that means i can only eat 3 times a day ? That doesn't sound good to me !
It's very important to me to gain some weight while there . Now i weigh around 73 kg / 160 lb and would
like to go to at least 80 kg / 176 lb .

* Supplements : i want to take some supplements with me so if anyone can tell me what's really necessary
to help with faster recovery and building muscle .

* Weightlifting : will it be possible to gain weight without lifting weights ?
I know exercices like deadlifting , squatting and benchpressing can help me out but would it be wise to
do them or would it be overkill ? And when should i do them ?

Ok then , i think that pretty much sums it all up .
So if there are people who can help me out with some tips and advice , or maybe have been to Thailand themselves
and can tell me what helped for them i would be very grateful !

Thanks alot , Steve

you have to eat proper, especially if you want to maintain or gain weight. training in thailand you lose close to 2000 calories per day, or maybe even more. you definitely need more than 2000 cals to maintain the weight minimum. dont forget your body needs a certain amount of cals (outside of the 2000cals lost during training) to function also. i dont know your weight, height etc so i cant really tell you how much cals you have to consume to maintain or gain weight.

for supplements, protein supplements are your best bet if you want to gain muscle mass and recovery. also, you could try creatine, but use with caution because it may cause unneccessary weight gain.

will it be possible to gain weight without lifting? sure. you can gain fat weight without lifting, just eat. i think what you mean here is muscle mass and then no, its not possible to gain weight without lifiting OR bodyweight exercises that target maximal strength.

hope ive helped.

@ hailme : in like 2 weeks i went from smoking almost 1 pack a day to maybe 2 cigarettes and then i quitted completely . And all that without pills or stuff like that .
I forced myself to stop smoking thinking about the fact that i wont get nowhere with the training unless i stopped my filthy habit .

@ doggy77 : i think if i didn't eat before training that my training would be alot less intensive and really not good at all . And i would lose ALOT moreweight then the 10 kg / 22 lb
i lost last time ! Didn't you feel miserable towards the end of the training ? I know i would man .

@ loathed : some good advice there man . I'm 1, 80 m / 5 ft 10 or 11 " ( i'm from europe so i don't know exactly ) and weigh around 73 kg / 160 lb .
I don't know my BF % but if i had to guess i think it's around 15 % , not much fat at all . And my metabolism is insane , i can pretty much eat what i want , as much as i want .

for me, think it is advisable to eat 3 hours before you train, lets say if training starts at 7am, you need to eat at 4am!!
thats why i skip breakfast before i train, only fruits n juice....yeah u are right, feel really hungry towards the 9am hour...Sticking out tongue

It's my 6th time alone to Thailand and it's gonna be my 3th time alone training there . But this year i have 2 friends of mine who are going to join me at the beginning of
next year for a couple of months so that's gonna be awesome ! Sometimes it can get lonely but that's when you stay like 3 or 4 months .
Trust me , there are so many cool things to see and do in Thailand that you won't even have time to feel lonely !
And you make friends with people real quickly so there's actually no excuse for feeling lonely . Don't worry being a female travelling alone , i've met a couple of girls already who were
by themselves and they had no problems whatsoever . Of course it's the same wherever you go in the world , don't do things you wouldn't do at home either .
My advice : get on that plane and prepare yourself for an experience of a lifetime !

dont worry about the safety, sometimes thailand is safer than say malaysia. of course you cannot compare to singapore...but dont worry about the safety.

also, where are you planning to go? which part of thailand? obviously if you go to the more touristy, packed areas...then safety will not be so much and issue, vice versa. dont worry about the lonliness also, you make friends there. Smiling

Don't go to Rawai , there are much better camps in Phuket . If i were you i'd take a look at these 3 :

Tiger Muay Thai :
Phuket Muay Thai :
Sinbi Muay Thai :

When are you going and for how long ?

well, every camp in phuket and bangkok is "touristy" in a sense. real training always comes from you alone, you get what you put in. if you want to train hard, you have to show them and let them know. many camps will always be happy to push you that extra step. doesnt matter if they have tourists or not.

I might be wrong but i don't think so . If you do a little research on the camps in Phuket then the names that pop up the most are Tiger and Sinbi . Of course that doesn't mean Rawai is bad at all but why travel to the other side of the world to train in a mediocre camp when you can train in a top class camp ?
Just take a look at the achievements of the trainers at Tiger Muay Thai :
That's what did it for me , knowing i'm going to be trained by real champions ! One trainer that really stands out is Noppadet Chengsimiw : he stands 1-1 with Naruepol and 2-0 with Yodsaenklai !!! Ok , i don't know exactly when they fought but it's impressive nonetheless .

Absolutely . At Tiger it's twice a week and at Phuket Muay Thai it's daily , altough when i stayed there it was more like 3 or 4 times a week . Laundry service is also available at the camps .
Or you can drop your laundry off at the many little shops who will do it for you very cheaply .

i dont know about phuket muay thai, but for tiger muay thai, they have maid service like twice per week. its sort of a random thing.

I'm going to TMT but i'm also going to check out Sinbi . At first i decided to only train at Tiger , but Sinbi also kept popping up everywhere i looked around on the forums .
So i'm going to check them both out and then stay with the one i like best .
How was Bangplee man ? I really wanted to go there first but it's too much money to stay there for 7 months . Damn , if i was rich i would move to Thailand and train every single day with Yodsaenklai !!! Did you get to train with him ?

hmmm-hmmm.... I just came back from a week long training in Phuket, at Patong Boxing gym. It was interesting and certainly eye-opener.
Sinbi camp is huge indeed, but far from any accommodation you can find on the net, maybe they can recommend something if you write them before you leave. Any camp in Phuket is very touristy, Rawai makes no difference.
At Patong I had the privilege to train with this guy, "Dan" - thai fighter, 27yo, he is fast as lightning and he pushed me to the far end of my limits Smiling
As the other guy said, you're safe if you don't do the things you won't do at home. Trainers are friendly, the other gym goers are too, but make sure you stick to a trainer and don't get you ego in the way, like accepting to spar with another tourist there, it's absolutely no point. Remember why you went there, to train, not to put up with some crap, and you'll be fine.

bangplee rooms got no tv or internet ...nearly bored the shit out of me when theres no training...Sticking out tongue but training was good, trainers are all very nice and humble, yo i think i saw yosdanklai's brother there, looks alot like him...think yod trains in pattaya if i am not wrong..
i heard the rate at TMT is really good ya? think it is generally quite expensive to train in bangkok anyway..

Talking about training on Phuket, Thailand... I'm really disappointed in the training at Tiger Muay Thai. Sure, there are some good trainers, but overall I guess they are somehow unmotivated because they get ripped off from the management like the guests. But there's another gym which opened just recently. It's called Dragon Muay Thai and is on the same road as Tiger Muay Thai. Much better atmosphere.

I've been to Thailand twice so far. And going alone is no problem, because you'll meet other people. It might be an advantage overall, because you make new friends. Smiling

Wolfie, no worries about gg to thailand to train alone. I did that a couple of times on my own, the gym that I was gg to made preparations, they sent a representative to pick me up at the airport and send me there and likewise when you are returning, they will send you back to the airport. From experience, everyone is friendly with ladies and leave them alone. The gym I went to offers laundry service, so I send my laundry daily to them, reasonble rates too. Smiling

Sorry, Bro Boddhisattva to interupt the thread.

If i can ever go training in Phuket, there is only one place for me there> Kiat Thanachot gym. It's north of the island, away from the messy tourist areas and attractions. Abt 5 min from the airport. Everything is way cheaper than Patong area. Training was around 2000bht/week and you get really intensive and personal training. When i was there with Wang Yu and Kenji we were the only foreigners training there! Their thai-fighters are sent regularly to Bangkok for fights, both in Raja and Lumpini stadiums.

The trainers are great, they will really see your style and teach you individual techniques witch suit your style and bodytype. When you go there you will instantly be part of the Family, the people there will really take care of you! Maybe you have seen Pat (Pipat Kritep) before, he won the Singapore Muay Thai explosion 1 eight man tournament back in 2007, he was also fighting a couple undercards in the Contender, also trained with us there for a few weeks. He was Yodsanklai's cornerman in the finals. Anyway, he is the main trainer there.

I can say i learned more in few days than in 6 months in Singapore, both the physical as the mental sides of Muay Thai. There is no such thing there as overcharging the farang and just making him tired so he thinks he's done a really good workout..

All who have a chance, you should go and try it out!

Hi there , is your name by chance Ivan ? If not , nevermind Eye

Dragon Muay Thai is a very small gym and like Tiger a 30 sec walk for me .

The head trainer Yod used to be one of the head trainers at Tiger but there were some problems and he left there .

He has an impressive fight record of more then 350 fights Jawdropping!

I know his cousin by chance and she told me that if i love Muay Thai that much ( wich i really do Green ) that i definitely should go and just take

a look at the training sessions and that i will see for myself how good he really is .

Haven't had the chance to do so , but very soon i will get some privates with him and get back to you all .

you take the main road from airport towards Phuket Town, turn right to Nai Yang beach, it's 100 meters from the junction

Lots of questions..

Regarding what to eat before training, you can not train on an empty stomach. Personally I eat yoghurt and drink orange juice, or just some fruit, then eat a substancial meal after training. One of the Lumpinee champions who trains here always eats two bananas before his morning training.

Regarding suppliments/weight training, you don't need to lift weight. I asked my thai trainer about this recently as a lot of champions train at this gym and don't lift weights. His answer was "Thai fighter no need bigger arm or bigger neck becuase Thai fighter need stronge and tight muscle to be quick move fast."

If you want to get stronger, then I would suggest a combination of pull-ups, sit-ups and push ups, but there is really no need to weight train.

Some of the people here take protein suppliments, but only to compensate for the lack of meat in their diet. I've recently started taking one myself to try and improve my recovery time and I'll post the results on my blog (below).

I hope that helps.
