Given the chance, would you turn pro or stay as an amateur fighter?

As the subject says....what do you think? Turning professional and fighting for yourself and seeing the world and learning or staying as an amateur fighter and fighting for an organisation who would not appreciate your hardwork?

I would rather be pro lah (my first fight was already pro) but I can also understand the rationale to have amateur rules in order to help promote the art.

Same for the case of boxing, amateur rules will help MT become recognized as a Olympic Sport. For the general public, seeing MT as a sport in the Asian Games and The Olympics will definitely help elevate the status and create more awareness for it.

I guess its still too early for a clear distinction between amateur and pro as most of the MT fighters started off as pro anyways. Given more time, i believe that this progression from amateur to pro will help to attract more participants to this sport. We need to remember that the rest of the world is not like Thailand...which parent or education authority will allow 6 year olds to fight full contact in a ring!!!???

Similar to boxing, i look forward to the day where fighters get to represent their countries for the Asian games or Olympics before turning pro as that's where the money is. Mesti cari makan kan? :green:

i do think amatuer fights develops one as a pro fighter.
kinda give u an experience yet not really the real thing.
A good stepping stone.
^^^ and i do realise im not exacly answering the question

and im sorry to burst your bubble hansen and all of the hopefuls in the forum.
But i really really doubt Muay Thai will ever be an Olympic sport.
One of the rules stated for a sport to be selectd was that it must not be biased to any country. E.g boxing
In Muay Thai, despite the huge amt of ppl practicing it for its effectiveness,
is still afterall Thai biased, and face it, Thais will grab the golds if it ever does become.
Its like silat, or wushu, obviously the malays will win silat and the chinese will win wushu and etc.
I-m so happy above is purely my pov, so dun kill me

Sound logical, but then again..isnt basketball kind of like the American game? i think it very much also depend on the selection list you send.

takraw is a thai sport. they kick everyone's asses day in day out pretty much like what they do in muay thai. if i'm not mistaken, takraw got accepted in the olympics but they gotta change the name to something more world-friendly -> aero volley.

who knows maybe muay thai will be accepted one day with a name change. dang, a name change would be nasty.

i always wondered abt a certain issue and was hoping someone can shed some light on it..there was talk that amateur fighters who take part in competition with prize money will not be able to do Amateur fights anymore, meaning representing Singapore and stuff.Ok what abt if,an amteur muaythai fighter takes part in a professional boxing or kickboxing or mixed martial arts tournament where they are paid.would it in anyway affect their amateur status in muaythai?it shoudnt since its a different sport with different rules under a different body right??

yes, you wont be penalized if it were a different discipline........

if you fight pro muaythai, you can still fight Amateur Boxing,

Look at our Thai counterparts, they fought in the Olympics for Boxing, they were also pro muaythai fighters,

Somrak S. Kamsing ring a bell?

Of course there is some fighters in singapore would want to turn Pro but never given a chance..Being controlled by a freak. This freak wants the organisation to be Amateur so that HE can earn from whatever events money. That SUCKS. Even the last event the undercard fight is a professional fight but suddenly it changes to Pro amateur fight something like that so that the under card fighters will not get any money.Amateur fight but without proper guards. Isn't it freaky.

From my point of view I think those who aspire to be true fighters or are really passionate about their fight sports should turn pro after a brief stint in the amateurs. There is so much you can do in the amateurs. Trust me I know how it feels to have the potential and the hunger to fight but always to be disappointed because of the bullshit politics involved around it. 10 years ago there was not much of an opportunity to turn pro. Now there are many avenues to do it...And I am very happy that I can realize where I stand now as a fighter.. Some organizations are promoting the pro culture strongly and those fighters with great potential should take the opportunity. You can only fight for so long, and if the organization you are fighting for as an amateur is only looking out for themselves then screw them!!! You do not need anyone controlling and babying you and telling you what to do, and whom and when to fight.......And what are you fighting for? Are you fighting for yourself? Are you fighting to show how good you are, to test yourself? The only way to do that I think is in the pros. And about the Olympics, I am willing to bet my last dollar that Muay Thai is not going to be in the Olympics for at least another 3 or maybe 4 Olympics. The truth is muay thai does not have a universal appeal. Dont get me wrong I love Muay Thai and whole lot of other fight sports, but we all have to get a reality check. Muay thai has been around forever but its only in the past few years that it has risen in popularity no thanks also to a nice reality show...You know which one I'm talking about.... So for those amateur fighters in their late teens or twenties, take my advice.... If you have the potential, or you think you have the potential... Take the plunge.... Try it at least.... remember.. FIGHTERS FIGHT!!!!

No doubt about that. But why must the freak control all the fighters and tell them what to do. He should be more supportive and not stopping the fighters from taking part any events.
