The Straits Times article about Contender Asia censorship

Today, 16th of April 2008
A gag order on the winner of Contender Asia after the finale in this Internet age makes everybody look stupid

Tay Yek Keak
I WENT to watch a very exciting Muay Thai boxing match last Saturday night and I am dying to tell you who won. But I simply cannot reveal the winner in the final of The Contender Asia, the reality TV series shot in Singapore.
[...]
Here’s the ridiculous thing: I wasn’t the only one privy to this super secret because there were about 6,000 other people around me, all presumably fight fans, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
And since Saturday, they’d probably have told their pals, their colleagues, their families, basically anybody interested to know, until that result is now ancient history.
[...]
In today’s free-wheeling, no-control, anyone-can-shoot circus of the new media this day and age, where even distant wars can be filmed and uploaded into cyberspace for instant broadcast, gagging the traditional old media is like Adam covering up Eve with a fig leaf. It’ll drop off the minute he turns away.
[...]
But this condition they’ve imposed is just plain dumb and clumsy.

but the article's kinda true. isnt it ? ( unless i've misread the point the article's trying to bring out ) i mean why cant the organizers just film and air the series prior to the date where the final will be shown live ? isnt it a better idea and i think it'll keep more trouble out of their way. I dunno maybe the organizer are just plain dumb... Finals are meant to be show LIVE! and then re-telecast for another 1556 times to satisfy fight fans.... no should be HARD-CORE FIGHT FANS! Yeah thats the word to use! [-(

ah...the Finals that is held last week i guess is quite a last minute thing. The dates for the Indoor Staduim have been fully booked, probably except 12 April. Remember the first time round the talk was that the Final was supposed to be held in Las Vegas? Then it played though to Macau? And finally cost cutting the whole thing and just do it in Singapore. and o...remember the prize moeny was initally to be 250k reduce to 150k only?

hmm....

As armchair critics it's hard to tell why they chose to do that. I thought about this, and realized that editing is a nightmare. Some film editors somewhere are having sleepless nights RIGHT NOW trying to edit the final fight contents and whatever fighter interviews into an episode, and from what I understand of editing, it takes 5 hours to edit a 5 sec clip, or something like that.

Shooting the show live just presents too much risk to them I think. Anything can go wrong, if an cameraman is not on the ball or if someone walks in front of the camera and blocks the view etc. They probably have a responsibility to the channel to pull advertisers so they can't anyhow screen an episode.

These may be just a few of the reasons why it's not shown live.

the in very first orginal contender that the latin snake won, he got a million USD.
in the contender 2, the price money was 500k.
In contender asia, 150k.
haha, talk about cost cutting and revenue effect.

well , thats rather true but it kinda pissed most fans off having to know who'll be the final winner before the semi betwen dzhabbar and jwp's aired on tv. but i have to agree too that there's no free lunch in this world. those that went to the finals live will get to witness 6 fights. i dont think all 6 fights will be aired on tv. perhaps only the yod vs jwp and zach vs zidov match. :-k

I blogged about this because I feel if people were allowed to give out spoilers, many Harry Potter fans would be angry }:)

The fault lies with the producers not anticipating the finals and the broadcasting timetable, but since that has been done, they can only issue a gag order to keep other fans from knowing the winner. Of course we all knew it was going to be Yod, since he's like so good >,<
